Commemorating the 100 Anniversary of the National Audubon Society
2 and the 25`" Anniversary of Audubon Minnesota
3 WFIEREAS, The National Audubon Society, the nation's largest bird conservation organizafion, is celebrating
4 its Centennial year in 2005 and Audubon Minnesota, the state office, is celebrating its 25�' year in 2005; and
WHEREAS, The mission of Audubon is to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, focusing on birds, other
wildlife, and their habitats for the benefit of humanity and earth's biological diversity; and
WHEREAS, The relationship beriveen Audubon and the Minnesota Legislature was cemented when the
Legislahxre passed the Minnesota Wedands Conservation Act in 1991, thus establishing an effort to avoid,
minimize and replace wetlands not only for wetland birds but other wildlife, as well; and
10 WHEREAS, Birds are excelient indicators of environmental health, affected by such factors as pollution,
11 climate change, tozcins, and habitat loss; it is in our best interest to heed such signs of processes which may
12 ultimately affect human populations; and
13 WHEREAS, Audubon Minnesota, its 14 chapters and 13,000 members are paying attention to these signs by
14 monitoring bird popularions through citizen science mechanisms, such as establishing Important Bird Areas,
15 engaging citizens in the Christmas and Crreat Backyard Bird Counts, educational efforts by chapters in schools,
16 its Upper Mississippi River program to restore the health of the river, and the encouragement of a conservation
17 ethic throughout all segments of our society; and
18 WHEREAS, Recognizing that Audubon's mission and activities are integral to maintaining the State of
19 Minnesota and the City of St. Paul as a great place to live, work and visit;
20 NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of St. Paul pause in its
21 deliberations to commemorate the 100`" year anniversary of the National Audubon Society and the 25 year
22 anniversary of Audubon in Minnesota, to congratulate Audubon on this milestone and encourage it to continue
23 its excellent conservation work for the next 100 years.
