William E. Carlson .
Commissioner , '
Department of Public Safety

St. Paul, Minnesota
Dear Commissioner Carlson:
As you know, since late in summer, we have been assisting the residents in
the Summit-University Area in the promotion of an accelerated program for
neighborhood improvement, as well as rodent control. This program was made
possible through funds Mayor Byrne received from some of the business commun-
ity.
Since these funds ran out some time ago, we have, with the cooperation of
several of the community organizations, been organizing community participa-
tion, block-by-block. The organizations were able, through donations, to
receive about $600 for the purchase of rodenticides while we were furnishing
the technical support. These funds are now exhausted, and we are in desper-
ate need of some funds to purchase rodenticides to continue this program.
We are fearful that if support funds are not obtained, the enthusiasm display-
ed by the residents will evaporate. This could have tragic results and un-
- do the excellent organizational work that has been done by the agencies and
staffs involved.
We strongly urge you, the Mayor, and the City Council to find some financial
means to continue the support of this important proect. The cost of the
rodenticides themselves will be but a minor contribution toward the total
manpower and enthusiasm that the residents in that area are contributing.
While we intend to continue with our sanitarian and public health education
assignment in the neighborhood, we could not possibly furnish funds for
rodenticides.
• Respectfully,
