The proposed � crossover consists of a doub�e width right-of-way and was to be for the ;` convenience of an as yet unconstructed Seminary }e"ntrance d'r�veway. The � initial request was denied. However, the Semina�y Administration persisted � f k. and the Parks Department was persuaded to acqui1 ce. On June 20, 1967 The � Council approved the plan, They next directed t �e Department of Public Works to commence constr.uction on the proposed crosso.ir. The estimated cost of � �� approximately $3700 was to be charged back to th"e Seminary since it was sole�y ;� for their benefit. To the best of our knowledge7; this action was taken by tle � Council without public notification or hearing Y�o evaluate public sentiment " ; � on this issue. � r_ ' f R The current status of this project is thus: so;l in the right-of-way and to ; soil has been bladed to the same elevation at the east and west drives ' flanking the center island. One of the employees of the Publi� Works Department on the site � stated to a resident yesterday that, "They will .go with the first big wind, ; why did they leave them stand?". It is the opinion of this decenting group that ''' crossway is unnecessary. i k This portion t�f the parkway has very little traffic, since most of the traf�f�ic� �� is diverted by Cleveland or Cretin Avenues. Additionally, to the best of our knowledge no traffic count has� been made to identify the f need for ��aclesi�c:ating the parkway. ' � - � J � I In addition to the wanton violation of the public lands, in our city which needs more park space, we feel that this crossovi� will cause our personal � property to be devaluated. Therefore, a reduction of property tax on our � lands would be in order, a reduction which is no�� justified when made solely � for the whims and convenience of a private non-t xpaying institution. � i � Although this is only one project in the city, i1s autocratic nature reflect�s, � a distressing attitude of some city officials to �ards public lands. We are � attending the Council Meeting to demand that this project be halted and that � the ground be restored to its original condition. Further a tree expert showldk 9 � be consulted in an attempt to preserve the wounded trees.
