 Et ,
Gentlemen: `

The City of Saint Pau1 recently completed construction `
of new fire station No. 6, located at 33 West Concord ,

The Department of Public Safety has made a study of the '
old station site and finds that it is to the best `
interests of the City that this site be disposed of. ;
,
` I, therefore, recommend that the Committee on Lands be '
authorized to dispose of the subject surplus site
subject to the conditions set forth in the attached .
letter of Mr. Ames, dated April 13, 1966, said site '
being more fully described in the attached resolution. '

286 Gity Hall and Court House ,
Dear Mr. Donvan :
This is to elaborate on our ' telephone conversation of last week
concerning the present, status of Fire Stations #1• and #6, as far -
as the Building Department is concerned.
These properties were surveyed by this department in early 1963 and
i a recommendation was made that immediate steps be taken to vacate ^-^-
the buildings because they were considered sub-standard, unhealthy
and in dangerous conditions . This recommendation was apparently in-
terpreted as a condemnati.on of the properties with the idea that they
i must be wrecked. However, this department ' s use of the word " con-
demnation" is that because of specific. defects in the building we
may proceed to condemn it in order to have specified corrections made
If it is determined that it is not practical to make specified cor-
t rection.s, the buildings are then wrecked. However, when the specified
corrections are made, the building could be restored to certain uses
and the requirements of the Building Code be met.
 . ..__ . . ._ .. _. _ . ....... . . ..._. .
' The following items are to be considered necessary in order to return
the buildings, formerly housiny stations #1 and #6, to some other us.
These items would be considered those necessary to meet the minimum
standards . Specific occupancies could well demand that 'more correc-
tions are made: , • . '
Fire Station #1 , located at 42 Main Street :
1.) Electrical service shoul.'d be rehablitated as the present service
consists of two 30-am . main circuits, far below the minimum re-
• quirements for a building of this size .

Fire Station #1 (Continued) - -
2) There is a crack in the first floor concrete slab across the i
main entrance doors. This crack appears to have been caused '
by the improper placement of reinforcing steel . It will be i
necessary that this section of the floor be re-built. ;, _
Fire Station #6, located at 12 E. Delos Street:
 - - -- .
' 1) The plumbing on the second floor is in very poor condition and -
must ei.ther be repaired or removed. .

2) The second floor has adly sagged toward the front of the ' +
building, probably caused by improper framing when an existing '
stairway was removed. It wil.l be necessar y that this section
of the floor be re-built. {
 ,
` 3) The pxoperty must have the raof leaks repaired.
I .
r -
4) The masonry parapet valls extending above the roof line must be
rebuilt as at the prsent tim thy are badly deteriorated and
ar.e not to be considered safe. -
r
When these iteins have been corrcted this department wouid give ap-
prov,al for limited occupancy , of the buildings . The second floor
construction, originally designed for a dormitory use, is not strong
enough to be used for warehouse floor loadings and would reauire ex-
tensive reinforcement before it can be put to any, but limitecl, use .
Other repairs and .crxet,o.r._,hat .mint_ ?._..tedd.vtld be determined
 by an occupant, based on jNhat use he intended to put the building to . }
