Resolution honoring Books For Africa
2 WIIEREAS, Books For Africa was founded in 1988 by local philanthropist Tom Warth, after a visit to a library
3 in Jinja, Uganda where he found bookshelves virivally empty; and
4 WI�EREAS, upon returning from his visit, Mr. Warth met with several publishers, booksellers and librarians
5 who made up the Minnesota Book Publishers' Roundtable to find a viable solution for this severe shortage of
6 books in Africa; and
7 WHEREAS, Books For Africa was born with a mission that is simple yet profound -- to collect, sort, ship and
8 distribute books to children of Africa -- and more simply, to put an end to Africa's book famine; and
9 WHEREAS, Books For Africa has found its home in its current site at 253 East Fourth Street in Saint PauPs
10 Lowertown neighborhood for several years, a site that includes administrative offices and the warehouse for
11 book storage, in addition to another recently opened warehouse; and
12 WHEREAS, books can be donated by publishers, schools, librazies, individuals or organizations and are sorted
13 and packed by legions of dedicated volunteers; and
14 WIIEREAS, this past year alone has seen several milestones for Books Far Africa, including the shipment of
15 1.4 million books to Africa with a value of almost $13 million; and
16 WHEREAS, today, Books For Africa is also announcing a partnership with the United Nations World Food
17 Programme, with books to be shipped for their School Feeding Program in Africa; and
18 WHEREAS, on Saturday, October 2, 2004, Books For Africa will be hosting a block party in celebration of the
19 shipment of their 10 millaonth book to the African continent; now therefore be it

1 RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Saint Paul wholeheartedly and enthusiastically congratulates Books
2 for Africa on this truly historic milestone and thanks them for their unique and 'unportant contribution to our
3 global community; and be it finaliy
4 RESOLVED, that Saturday, October 2, 2004 is hereby declazed Books For Africa Day in the great City of
5 Saint Paul, Mivnesota.
