THE SUPPORT FOR SIDE4IALKS AS EXPRESSED IN THIS PETITION IS I BELIEVE ALSO REPRE— SENTATIVE OF THE FEELINGS OF RESIDENTS ON ATLANTIC AND DULUTH STREETS WHERE I . UNOERSTANO SIDEWALK IS ALSO PROPOSED AND WHICH WILL BE CONSIDERED AT THE SAME TIME AS CHAMBER STREET. THE ONLY ARGUMENT AGAINST SIDEWALK AS NEAR AS I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO DETERMINE IS THAT IT WILL COST THEM MONEY — MONEY WHICH INCiDENTALLY THE MAJORITY OF RESIOENTS HAVE ALREADY EXPENDED — OR THOSE WITHOUT CHILDREN WHO DO NOT WANT CHILDREN PLAYING IN FRONT OF THEIR HOUSE ONE MUST CONCLUDE FROM THIS THEY PREFER TO SEE THEM PLAY IN THE STREET. THESE PEOPL.E I AM SURE DO NOT WALK IN THE STREET WHE(d SIDEWALK IS AVAILABLE AND I DOUBT IF THEY WOULD RELISH A TWO BLOCK WALK TO THE MAILBOX TO GET THEIR MAIL AND NEWSPAPER YET THEY EXPECT THOSE DELIVERIES UNDER UNFAVORABLE CONDITIONS. I AGAIN URGE THE COUNCIL TO INCLUDE IN THESE WORK ORDERS THE EAST—WEST STREETS BETWEEN EAST SHORE DRIVE AND ENGLISH BOUNDED BY LARPENTER AND ARLINGTON. THIS WAS REQUESTEO MANY TIMES ON MY ROUNDS WITH THE PETITION. THESE EAST—WEST STREETS ARE THE KEY TO EASY AND SAFE ACCESSABiLITY TO THE BUS LINE ON ENGLISH AND THE ENJOYMENT OF THE PARK AND LAKE PHALEN. THE BUS IS USED AS THE MAYOR AND COUNCILMEN WELL KNOW BY THOSE ELDERLY CITIZENS MOST (N NEED OF SIDEWALK. I PERSONALLY KNOW OF ONE ELDERLY LADY OF SOME SO YEARS MRS. BENJAMIN JOHNSON OF 15C7 ATIANTIC THAT USES THE BUS TWO TO FOUR TIMES A WEEK TO VISIT A SHUT—IN FRIEND. IN ADDITION TO THE ELDERLY THERE ARE MANY WORKING PEOPLE AND STUDENTS DEPENOENT UPON BUS TRANSPORTATION. OF WHAT POINT IS PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IF IT IS NOT EASILY ACCESSABLE? IT IS NOT VERY CONVENIENT TO WALK SEVERAL BLOCKS THRU DEEP AND RUTTED SNOW 'IN THE WINTERTIME — TO SAY NOTHING OF THE SPRING THAW: THIS IS NOT A DEVELOPING NEIGHBORHOOD AS MOST HOMES HAVE BEEN HERE TEN YEARS. (T IS OBVIOUS THESE PEOPLE WITHOUT SIDEWALK WILL NOT VOLUNTARILY INSTALL IT BUT WILL CONFORM TO THE MAJORITY ONLY BY DIRECTION FROM THE COUNCIL. VOTE YES. SINCERELY ' . R.S.
