Sales Professional in the Printing Tndustry Place of Employment: Pitman Company Committee Applied or: Neighborhood Sales Tax Reinvestment Program (STAR) 'What skills, training or experience do you possess for the committee for which you seek appointment? STtTLLS (Proven) Working as a successfut sales professional selling capital equipment to private businesses one learns to recognize what investments will have a long term positive effect on that organization. For every investment there are costs and risks which must be balanced aainst and compazed to other possible investments, or opportunity costs for not taking action on a particular project. Recommendations made and accepted by businesses come with long term ramifications, both positive and negative. My track record with businesses is strong on the gositive side. These skills coupled with ongoing learning and participation in community projects aze uansferable to positive participation on the STAR Board of Directors. TRAINTN (Academic, formal and informal) Life changes constantly. Personal opinion and perspective is a constant moving target. No one is born with the skills to effectively understand and communicate with everyone. There are however ways to gain knowledge through formal coursework and personal self- education, .4 personal goal in my life is to gain these skills to be a more effective professional and responsible citizen. Numerous seminars, books, and organizations have helped me to improve my communication, negotiation and decision making skills. This training is constant and ongoing. This year's formal education process comes from my enrollment in the Active Citizens School (ACS). The focus of this organization is to enable those who are already involved in public service to increase their competency and effectiveness in workino with the public system as it exists. 0201/00 Page 1 of 3 FEB-01-2000 1429 PITMRN '•P.003ia4 (' S° I E7PERIENCE Practical experience is more heavily weighted on the for profit business side of things as noted above. Participation on the not for profit sector does exist in various capacities. For two yeazs I served as a member of the boazd for a local arts organization, The Grand Symphonic Winds. Iaving served as ueasurer and a member of the fund raising committee provided experience in working within the structure of a boazd environment. More recently participation and election to the West Side Community Aevelopment Corporation Board of Directors (Riverview Economic Development Association) formalizes my active participation and personal efforts to recruit private businesses to invest and locate to the up and coming West Side. On a persona] note, my wife Julie and T have recently made a large personal investment on the West Side of St. Paul. The experience of building a new home in a tess-than- desirable location (accordin to lending institutions) was a real eye opener. Publicly based construction financing, gap financing for negative loan to value ratios, were al1 new to us. In the end we worked with private companies and lending institutions that ultimately appraised the property for what it cost to build, financed the project with lower costs than the public funding, with less paperwork and commitments to the tocal neighborhood housing organization. In the end we got the home we wanted, in the neighborhood we liked at a competitive price, without using precious public resources that aze certainly needed for other projects. This experience has given me an introduction into the public participation in private transactions.
