WHEREAS, on December 2, 2003, Mayor Kelly hosted a Latino Forum in the City of St. Paul; and
WHEREAS, the leadership of the Mexican American Veterans AMVET Post 5 approached the Mayor for his support
to build a memorial in honor of Mexican American and all veterans who served in the various branches of the military,
as well as, in the different wars; and
WHEREAS, Mexican Americans began to arrive in St. Paul in greater nuxnbers in the early 1920's and the West Side
Flats of St. Paul became the center of the City's Mexican American community; and
WHEREAS, the Mexican American community has long historical ties to Harriet Island and it would be fitting and
appropriate to locate such a memorial on Harriet Island and for it to be laiown as the Plaza de Honor; and
WHEREAS, the memorial wouid be dedicated to promote awareness about the sacrifices and contributions made by St.
Paul men and women who have historically fought for their country to defend freedom up to the present day; and
WHEREAS, this space will be a reverent place where all may come to reflect, as well as, a locale where the residents of
St. Paul can celebrate and honor our veterans; and
WHEREAS, the residents of St. Paul, as a whole, benefit in recognizing and honoring our veterans while instilling
pride in our city;
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council finds that the establishment of a Plaza de Honor Veterans
Memorial on Harriet Island would be appropriate and fitting and that the necessary city officials are hereby directed to
take the steps necessary to establish such a Plaza de Honar Veterans Memorial on Harriet Isiand.
