1 WHEREAS, the Saint Paul City Council has selected a Police Chief Search Committee made up of representatives
2 of the Saint Paul community; and
3 WHEREAS, althou�h efforts were made to recruit a broad diversity of candidates for the committee through a wide
4 variety of formats, efforts to notify the Axnerican Indian Community were not effective; and
5 WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes the unique culture of the American Indian community; and
6 WHEREAS, last week Councilmember Helgen and Councilmember Lantry met with representatives of the
7 American Indian Community to show their support for the participation of American Indians in the Police Chief
8 selection process and to discuss ways to ensure their inclusion; now, therefore be it
9 RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council issues a sincere apology to the American Indian community in Saint
10 Paul for ineffectively promoting the committee to the community; and be it further
11 RESOLVED, that the Saint Paut City Council expresses its commitment to ensuring that all community members
12 have an opportunity to participate in the Police Chief selection process, whether they are a member of the selection
13 committee or not; and be it further
14 RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council will produce and distribute flyers promoting upcoming Police
15 Selection Committee public meetings at the April 4, 2004 Indians in Science Day at the Science Museum of
16 Minnesota, and at various events celebrating American Indian culture at the American Indian Family Center; and
17 be it further
18 RESOLVED, that the City of Saint Paul shall update its notification lists to ensure inclusion of all communities in
19 future notices from the City; and be it
20
21 FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council believes all communities should be heard during the
22 Police Chief selection process, aud will urge the selection committee to maintain regular and meaningful
23 communication with all interested parties in the process.
