Referred to Committee: Date 1 Whereas, The Como Zoo and Conservatory Society is a non-profit organization that promotes, 2 supports, preserves and enhances Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. The Society does this 3 primarily through Capital and annual fund-raising, mazketing and public relations; 4 Whereas, the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory Campus identified a need for construction of 5 new facilities to improve animal care, conservatory e�ibit space and operations, education 6 space, visitor amenities and administrative fixnctions; Whereas, the Como Campus launched a$31 million capital improvement project to improve the above detailed facilities and requested the Society partner on the project; 9 Whereas the Society accepted responsibility for raising private sectar funding for the project and 10 set a goal of securing $7.91 million from the private sectar; 11 Whereas, the Society achieved its goal ofraising $7.91 million and did so by the goal date; 12 Whereas, with the funding secured by the Society and funding from the public sector, the Animal 13 Support Building opened in May 2002 and has greatly improved facilities for the care and 14 management of Como Zoo's animal collection; 15 Whereas, with the funding secured by the Society and funding from the public sector, the 16 renovation of the Zoological Building was complete in April 2003 and staff happily moved out of 17 old conshuction trailers into their new space in May; 18 Whereas, with the funding secured by the Society and funding from the public sector, the 19 restoration of the Marjorie McNeely Conservatory is targeted for completion in early 2005 when 20 the Fern Room, Bonsai Room and the Orchid House will open; 21 Whereas, with the funding secured by the Society and funding from the public sector, the Visitor 22 and Educarion Resource Center is taking shape with ail of the exteriar structure in place. The 23 visitor and educafion facilities will open in eazly 2005.
