Support For Brownfield Cleanup and Economic Development
1 WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul is a"built city" and has a limited amount of land for economic development;
2 and
3 WHEREAS, much of the land that is available for economic development is polluted and unuseable in its current
4 state; and
5 WHEREAS, cieanup of polluted land (brownfields) is costly and hinders the ability of the City to successfuily
6 partner with private developers because of the addiUOnal resources needed to cover planning, site assessment, site
7 preparation, addirional liability insurance and any perceived risks associated with brownfield cleanup; and
8 WfIEREAS, cities have traditionally relied upon state and federal aid for brownfield cleanup in order to provide
9 land far economic development; and
10 WHEREAS, such economic development will enhance the property tax base and create new jobs in Saint Paul; and
11 VJHEREAS, the Saint Paul Ciry Council is the policy making body for the City of Saint Paul, and as such, its work
12 is inextricably linked to the City's I.egislative Agenda; now therefore be it
13 RESOLVED, that the City of Saint Paul supports funding for brownfield cleanup in arder to assist the City in its
14 efforts for economic development and enhance the safety and quality of life for its residents.
