WHEREAS , the Naval Air Station, Twin Cities , since 1946 ,
has through its training program furnished the nation with over
2 ,500 Naval Aviation Officers through its officer procurement prograra;
and whereas , the Naval Air Station, Twin Cities , has also been the
site of first enlistment for 5 ,600 Navy men during this same period
of time; and
WHEREAS, the Naval Air Station, Twin Cities , is also the
headquarters for the training of over 2 ,300 Navy and Marine Reservists
to the greater benefit of the country; and whereas , such training
activities have distinguished the Naval Air Station, Twin Cities , by
the award thereto of the Edwin Francis Conway Trophy for overall
efficiency five times ; and
WHEREAS , the United States Department of Defense has
announced plans to close this Naval Facility, the onl.y military
est�blishment in Minnesota which s�rves a five state area, for so
called "economy" reasons ; and whereas , such closing will not only
be a detriment to the defense readiness of the nation by causing
Naval and Marine officers to travel a greater distance for training
to the detriment of the overall program, but will also have an
adverse effect upon the economy of the Twin Cities area;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City
of Saint Paul hereby record its opposition to the elosing of the
Naval Air Station, Twin Cities , and the Mayor of the City of Saint Paul
is hereby authorized and directed to send copies of this resolution
to the United States Department of Defense and to our Congressional
Delegation.
