1 Honoring Kevin Duchschere
2 WHEREAS, Kevin Duchschere came from North Dakota to attend the University of St. Thomas and embark on a
3 joumalism career that brought him to City Hall six years ago to cover the City Council for the StarTribune; and
4 WHEREAS, Kevin provided "fair and balanced" coverage of City Hall's inhabitants, though the fact that he never moved
5 into our newsroom was duly noted; and
6 WHEREAS, he gave proper deference to our best intentions and tried to look the other way when we fell victim to taking ourselves too
7 seriously...we still haven't quite forgiven the fad that Kevin's coverage of Mayor Randy Kelly's 2003 trip to the hockey play-offs in
8 Denver meant we all had to stay home and watch the games on N with the rest of the world; and
9 WHEREAS, Kevin's extensive coverage of Saint Paul included 47 stories mentioning the word "ethanol," 17 stories mentioning Ayd
10 Mill Road and 11 mentioning the proposed St. Thomas expansion; and
11 WHEREAS, Kevin's election coverage included repoAing on Norm Coleman the DFLer, Norm Cofeman the Republican and Norm
12 Coleman the Senator. Counting Second Ward Councilmember Chris Coleman, Kevin has written 641 stories mentioning the name
13 Coleman; and
14 WHEREAS, Kevin's hard-hitting gritty style of big-city journalism drew international attention when he covered Saint Paul's Ziegler
15 sisters on the lemonade beat, preparing him, no doubt, for the rigors of covering Washington County;

17 WHEREAS, Kevin has drawn appreciation from his own Councilmember Pat Harris for having an immaculate yard and from
18 Councilmember Kathy Lantry for shaving his moustache (he looks younger, she says); and
19 WHEREAS, we have long worried about losing Kevin to the foreign service, never dreaming that he would succumb to the entreaties
20 of Lake Elmo;
21 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Saint Paul extends its gratitude to Kevin Duchschere for
22 his professional contribution to the work of City govemment and wishes him all the best on his new beat.
