WHEREAS, the St. Paul Police Department obtained a grant from the Minnesota Department of Public
Safety, the St. Paul Foundation and St. Paul Companies Foundation to institute an Intensive Spanish
Language Program for police officers; and
WHEREAS, the program was designed to provide police personnel with an academically challenging
instructional program, l�ey to the projects success is the involvement of community members for
instruction, mentoring, community relations, and skill development. To enhance the program, officers
will work with mentoring families from the St. Paul community; and
WHEREAS, to facilitate the assignment of inentor families to participating officers, a culturally
appropriate mentor/volunteer dinner will be held. The dinner to be held at St. Paul Charter School,
Academia Cesar Chavez will involve up to 80 participants.
WHEREAS, the public purpose of the event is recognize the commitment of the volunteers/mentors
and their families, instruct them on the training program provided to police personnel, direct them on
how they can help further develop the language skills of police personnel, introduce and provide a
structured forum for participant officers to meet their respective mentor family; and
NOW BE IT ORDERED, the proper City Officials are hereby authorized to pay for costs associated
with the above described event, not to exceed $600.00

The.SPPD Intensive Spanish Language Program is a grant funded project for police personnel that combines language slalls
training and the involvement of community mentor families to help o�cers develop their skills and gain cultural awareness. A
volunteer/mentor dinner is planned to orient wlunteer/mentor families and facilitate a culturally appropriate, structured process
for officers and mentor families to meet.
