Dear Commissioner Meredith:
Re: Repeal of Ordinance Prohibiting Women Bartenders
Lieutenant Kissling of the Vice IInit has indicated that
there are liquor establishments in the City of Saint Paul which
are employing women bartenders. As you know, Saint Paul has an
ordinance prohibiting women bartenders, except under certain
circumstances, which ordinance reads as follows:
" (5) No person under twenty-one (21) years
of age shall be employed in any rooms constituting the
place in which intoxicating liquors are sold 'on sale. '
No woman except a licensee or wife of a licensee, or
the manager of the establishment if the licensee is
in the armed forces, shall dispense liquors behind a
bar or counter in an establishment in which intoxi-
cating liquors are sold 'on sale. "'
The City of Minneapolis has a similar provision which was
recently held to be invalid by the Hennepin County District Court.
It is my feeling that this provision in our Liquor Code should
be repealed, and I am submitting the draft of an ordinance which
would accomplish this.
I would be glad to discuss this situation with you any time
at your convenience.
Very truly yours,
;-
