03-1037Council File # l,�` �� Green Sheet # o���O�� Presented by Referred To RESOLUTION OF SAINT PAUL� 1�AAINNESO� ,� � � ..,,_�s f f��� .. �!�" ����r'.. 1 � ° .- ., , � i f���,� �i/1�, Comniittee Date RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF KSTP-AM RAI)IO'S ROLE IN FIGHTING RACISM ANID SUSTAINING STRONG COMM[ JNITIES 1 WI3EREAS, a communiry controversy has erupted over remarks made during a Nov. 5, 2003, KSTP-AM 2 radio program, directed at Saint Paul Chief of Police William Finney upon the announcement of his 3 retirement, and 4 WI-IEREAS, Saint Paul community leaders have called for an apology for comments perceived by them 5 to be racially insensitive and inappropriate, and 6 WHEREAS, those involved in the subject broadcast haue defended their actions and refused to render an 7 apology, and 8 WHEREAS, the comments made on KSTP-AM Radio would not be considered to be appropriate under 9 the city's workforce policy; and 10 WIIEREAS, Archbishop Harty Flynn has released his letter on racism in which he urges Minneapolis and 11 Saint Paul communities to work to address the discrimination experienced by diverse ethnic and racial 12 groups in the Twin Cities; and 13 WHEREAS, the St. Paul Branch of the NAACP has called upon the city and its leaders to take action on 14 an issue which has divided our community; therefore be it 15 RESOLVED that the Saint Paul City Council calls on KSTP-AM Radio to acknowledge the value of civil 16 public dialogue, and be it further 1 0�-�0.�� RESOLVED that the Saint Paul City Council calls on KSTP-AM Radio to recognize its role in fighting racism and sustaining strong communities in Mirniesota.
