WI�REA5, Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center is owned and operated by the City of
Saint Paul, Division of Parks and Recreation; and
WI�REAS, the presently unnamed tennis courts at Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center
are scheduled to be demolished this year and replaced by new ones; and
WFIEREAS, Summit-UniversiTy area resident Emie Greene, who passed away on May 30, 2002,
at the age of 83, campaigned vigorously to have tennis courts constructed thzoughout Saint Paul and in
the Summit-University area in particular; and
WIIEREAS, Mr. Greene worked tirelessly to get young people in the communiTy interested in
the game of tennis and developed programs to advance their skills; and
WIIEREAS, Mr. Greene coached both youth and adults in tennis and mentored many young
citizens about life beyond the spoft; and
13 WHEREAS, at its June 13, 2002, meeting, the Ramsey Hill Association approved a motion
14 recommending that the Council of the City of Saint Paul adopt a resolution to name the tennis courts at
15 the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center after Mr. Ernie Greene; and
16 WT�REAS, the Division of Pazks and Recreation supports naming the tennis courts at Martin
17 Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center the "Ernie Greene Tennis Courts"; and
18 WHEREAS, at its August 14, 2002, meeting, the Pazks and Recreation Commission adopted
19 Resolution 02-17, which endorses the proposal to name the tennis courts at Martin Luther King, Jr.
20 Recreation Center the `Ernie Greene Tennis Courts"; now, therefore,

This resolution seeks authorization to name the soon to be constructed tennis courts at Martin Luther King, Jr.
Recreation Center after long time Summit-University area resident Ernie Greene, who recently passed away at the age of
83. Mr. Greene,worked diligently over time to support the construction of new tennis courts in Saint Paul and spent a
great deal of time giving tennis lessons to youth and adults.
