He has been an avowed and determined environment- alist. He is a practicing opponent of secrecy in government." Editorial, Dec. 17, 1971 It is obvious that (the next mayor) needs to be an innovator9 a person who can unite business and labor, conservative and liberal. This would require intelligent, ceeative leader- ship and a tough-mindedness about sta.ff appointments. Mayoral candidate Lawrence Cohen fits the decription above. Cohen can get nothing but excellent grades in his role as county commis- sioner and a man of ideas. He has had experience in politics as chair- man of the DFL's Fourth district. As a successful attorney he has peoved himself in the private sector. He has helped transform a county commission from a weekly joke to a respected body with administrative clout. Editorial, March 7, 1972 PREPARED AND DISTRIBUTED BY COHEN FOR MAYOR VOLUNTEER COMMITTEE, MARVIN G. CLEVELAND, CHAIRMAN, 585 WABASHA AVE., ST. PAUL, MN. 55101 , . - . . • f PETITION AGAINST PRELIMINARY ORDER 258307 OF APRIL 27, 1972 CALLING FOR THE CONSTRUCTION/RECONSTRUCTION OF SIDEWALK ALONG THE EAST SIDE OF GROTTO FROM W. COTTAGE TO W. ARLINGTON. We, the undersigned, are unalterably opposed to said order for the construction of a sidewalk along our properties. Following is a list of our arguments : 1. For 25 years there has been no sidewalk adjacent to a majority of the properties. Why is a si,dewalk needed there now? 2. The sidewalk across Grotto Street is adequate enough to handle current pedestrian traffic, which is less than fifty people per day. 3. Further, city bus passengers are using only east-west sidewalks , since the bus travels north-south and stops at all intersections. 4. We would suggest that prioraties be changed for residential sidewalk construction from the current policy to a policy which would call for new sidewalk construction based on owner request and sidewalk repair based on a Department of Public Works request as it is now. 5. Finally, as you are aware, the cost of construction of sidewalks on side abutting properties is split between the homeowner and the city. We know that the money saved by the city could be used to a much greater benefit in other areas requiring city financing. For these reasons we xecommend cancellati,on of Preliminary Order 258307.
