Dear Commissioner Levine :
We urge that the ?1ET-IIAC Coun.cil give t?crough consideratior.
to the Eagan Townsh.ip Site for additional landing strips
linked with the present Minneapolis-St.Paul International
Airpart as a way to a.roid r.onstructing a whollr new aiport .
+Ie urge this alternative because of the ecological impact
that new airport construction either in the North Search
Area or the Ham Lake Site would impose on the Carlos Avery
Wildlife Panagement Area and the Cedar Creek Natural
History Area. Care should be taken to compare the ecologi-
cal impact of the recently proposed Eagan Township Site
with other possible sites .
A new airport at the Nerth Search Area would be particu-
larly damaging to the ecology of the Cedar Creek Natural
History Area, a 5600-acre tract , jointly operated for the
past thirty years by the Minnesota Academy of Science and
the University of Minnesota. It is dedicated to scientific
research and teaching of natural history and ecology and
to the preservation of_ natural habitats . Its natural
values located in close proximity to the Twin Cities
Metropolitan Area make it particularly useful for scienti-
fic and educational purposes . The research already done
at Cedar Creek has gained world-wide attention in scien-
tific circles , and an international reputation for
excellence in biological sciencea for Nlinnesota . The
general public is at present not aware of the seriously
damaging effect which a new airport aith its associated
industrialization would surely have on this sensitive study
area. The reason is that there has been a concerted effort
to avoid publicity which vould attract visitors with only
a casual interest . Visitation by large numbers of persons
would seriously interfere with the studes going on there .

Dear Commissioner Levine.
It is the understanding of the ;Vlinnesota Academy of Science thai a decision
y tne Metropolitan Council-Metropolitan Airparts Commission on the air.ori
siting is imminent and possibly favorable to th Northern Search Site. W"e
wish to go on record as opposed to such a deciion and ure that considertion
of am Lale and the lTOrthern Search ite be abandoned because of the
ecolo;ical impact on existing facilities such as the Cedar Creel Natural
. :istory Area and the Carlos Avery Wildlife Management Area.
Our paramourt concern is in regard to the Ced r Cree Natural His±ory Area
located near East Bethel, Minnesota. This 5, 00 acre area, which is
dedicaed to scientific research and teaching o natural history, has been in
existance for thirty years and operated jointly by the Minnesota Acacemy of
Science and the University of 1\/Iinnesota. It is a very unique area in its state
of natural preservation particralarly when considering its proximity to a
metropolitan complex. Further encroachment i,due to metropolitan sprawl,
and particularly construction of a new airport, ,will be del.eterious to scientific
research and the educational advantages for fu ure generations. The researcl
and educational efforts conducted at Cedar Crel Natural History Area ha-e
brought international acclaim to the excellence of biological studies in Minnesota.
The Minnesota Academy of Science also urges hat great consideration be i-ei
to the proposal of a satelite operation with the additional runways being located
in Egan Township rather than the construction of a completely new second
airport, This proposal seems to have considerable merit not only from the
economy that could be achieved but also from t1e lessening of the ecological
impact. This latter aspect should naturally re eive close attention and st..dv,
Sincerely,
. G',f-' _
