Dear iKrs. Butler,
de are indeed distresd by your letter of May 19 which notified
us of the proposed reconstruction of siaewalks on Wilder Ave. between S.immit and

Selby nvenues„
We built our present home on tre southeast corner of Fortland Avr.
and N:ilder Ave. in 1933 and have maint=iina it in a presentable manner for thirty-n
.years. th'e complied with so-calle n,cessary improvements when they were recommended
by city officials even tr.our_ we tersor_all,y hId the opinion that on more tran one
occasion they were superflu.oizs ar.d ill-advised. One example was tt-1e laying of new
sidewalks on Portland Avenue in :^:.ugust, 19b5, We were assessed w149.82, although our
si3ewalk was not damaged by tree roots, since there are no trees on our fifty foot
frontage, but the new sidewalk ha3 to be completed to the corner.
'r,e realize that roots of older trees cause sidewalk tiles to rise and
becore irregular. It does not seem impractical to suggest that those sidewalk blocks
aifecte3 by roots be lifted, tre tree roots be reduced or removed where necegsary, an
the present, unbroken sidetralk tiles be firmly replaced. The cost of such Iabor would
sureiy be less tran the pouring of new cement sidewalks.
Throuh t-e years we have been aware many times of the disadvantages
of living on a corner, a fact you may agree to frm your own experience; annual assss-
ments for street prinkling on the paved street, oiling on the black-topped street; and
tree trimming eve:y fea ys2rs on both streets even though there are no trees on a portion
of the property.
uring the years that Ns. Engel was a wage-earner we accepted our ob-
ligations and took Cre o_° them. IJow at age 72 he views with alarm an assessment of
aproxirrw tely 8GC hen we deeT it unnecessry. The majorit,y of our neighbors have
lived in their ho:nes =bout t!;e same number of years that we have an3 like ourselves,
live on retirement ir.ccmes.
:ti'e take this opportunity as two concerne citizens to make our sta.tus
known to you and your f ellow council members before the public hearing on June 7 in the
hope that such knowledge may convince you that Prelimi.nary Order 257976 should be
nulli.fied in the interests of the affected tax-payers.
?roe will surely apFreciate your per.sonal efforts in our behalf.
Very truly yours,
Albert W, and II.izabeth D. gel
