RESOLUTION NAMING A STREET FOR DR MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR
WHEREAS, Doctor Maaiin Luther King Jr. is known as one of the world's best voices for non-violent social
change strategies for civil rights, voting rights and color-blind justice; and
WFIEREAS, Dr. King's views, hopes and dreuns were delivered to the world thrqugh his esceptional oratorical
skill and personal courage; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor of Saint Paul has �pressed support for renaming a street for Dr. King m the City of
Saint Paiil, and the Saint Paul City Council passed a resolution on February 27, 2002, calling for a Saint Paul
street to be renan�ed after Dr. King; and
WHEREAS, the 5aint Paul City Council passed a resolution'on Mazch 13, 2002 establishmg a Legislative
Advisory Committee to make recommendations for the naming of a street for Dr. Martm Luther King, Jr.; and
WHEREAS, the Legislative Advisory Committee identified in its report to the City Councfl on July 1Q 2002
three streets in Saint Paul to be renuned for Dr. King: Cedaz Street, Mazshall Avenue and Consritution Avenue;
and
W�IEREAS, upon revaew of the Legislative Advisory Committee's report the City Council believes that
Constitution Avenue is the most appropriate and suitable street to be named for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
given that it is a street of statewide unportance and serves as the address for the State Capitol, State Office
Building and Mnmesota Judicial Centar; now therefore be it
RESOLVED that Consritution Aveuue, in its entirety, be renamed The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.;
and be it
FiTRTFIER RESOLV ED, that the DeparCmeut of Pubfic Works effect the name change of the street by changing
all relevant street signs and city records.
