WHEREAS, There are in Sai t Paul some 13,000 persons age 65 and
over living alone; in addition there are a number of disabled or handicapped
individuals also living alone; and
WHEREAS, there have been a number of incidents of persons living
alone that were found several days after they had died; and
WHEREAS, a daily outside contact for persons living alone, but
on a voluntary bas3s, should substantially contribute to such individuals'
peace of mind by eliminating the chance that they wi11 go unaided because of
sickness or in3ury because no one knows of their pred3.cament; and
WHEREAS, there are several employees in the city inspection and
service programs that, in the course of their daily duties, have contact
with persons living alone; and
WHEREAS, St. Luke's Division of United Hospitals since May 1970
has provided a 24 hours a day, seven days a week tel�phone contact service,
without charge and on a voluntary basis, called Tele-Care; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That all City department heads are hereby directed to
familiarize themselves and especially their employees that have contact with
single persons living alone on the details of the Tele-Care Program.
FURTHER RESOLVED, That the City C1erk is hereby instructed to see
that city officers and employees receive information on the Tele-Care Program
and to arrange necessary meetings between the pro�ect coordinator from
St. Luke's Hospital, Mrs. Marilyn Olson, and city department heads and
employees.
