Mr. Robert Trudeau, Director
Department of Finance
City Hall
St. Paul, Minnesota
Dear Mr. Trudeau:
I have been asked by a representative of the residents on
Cretin Avenue to write your department regarding the proposed
installation of inercury vapor street lights along Cretin Avenue
between Marshall and Interstate Highway 94. As the DFL endorsed
candidate for State Representative for District 62-A, I support the
position of these residents to preserve their neighborhood from
what appears to be an unnecessary improvement that will detract
from the appearance of this area.
T understand the justification for this program to be safety.
Yet I understand few accidents have occurred under existing conditions;
the speed limit on Cretin was recently arbitrarily increased from 30
to 35 miles per hour without good reason and better alternative
safety provisions are available.
The problem appears to arise because there is no lighting on
the west side of Cretin. It seems more appropriate to me to place
the traditional street lighting in this area which is in keeping
with the character of the area.
Before I-94 was built Cretin was a much quieter street; now it
would appear the City is doing many things to increase the plight of
those residents who find they now live on a major throughfare.
In addition, it is my understanding that the City is unable to
regulate properly the use of this street by trucks. I would be very
interested to know what steps are being taken to improve this
situation.
Please contact me if I' aan be of any assistance in resolving
this dispute.
  Yours very truly,
i-• ...
