Cazey was bom in Saint Paul, and; 2 WHEREAS, Duane Careygraduated from Highland Park High School in 1975 and furthered his education earning a Bachelor 3 of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics as well as a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering 4 at the University of Minnesota, and; 5 WI�REAS, Duane Carey received his commission from the Reserve Officer Training Corps in 1981 and graduated from 6 Undergraduate Pilot Training in 1983 and has achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force, and; 7 WHEREAS, through skill and determinationLieutenant Colonel Duane G. "Digger" Carey eamed numerous awards including 8 the Distinguished Flying Cross and three Air Medals, and was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 1996, and; 9 WHEIZEAS, earned the privilege and responsibility to serve as pilot on the STS-109 Columbia from March 1- 12, 2002 10 logging over more than ten days in space and traveling over 3.9 million miles, now; 11 THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council does hereby proclaim Thursday, October 24, 2002 to be 12 forever known in the City of Saint Paul as i3 LIEUTENANT COLONEL DUANE "DIGGER" CAREY DAY 14 BE IF FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council does also urge all of the citizens of Saint Paul to join them in 15 wishing the very best to one of our true hometown heros.
