BL.UE -MAY - cil Resolution Presented By / Referred To Committee: Date Out of Committee By Date WHEREAS, the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , through his leadership of the civil rights movement in this country, has earned an honored place in American history; and WHEREAS, Dr. King' s practice of peaceful, non-violent protest in pursuit of equal rights for all citizens stands as an example for people of every race, color and creed; and WHEREAS, a nationwid2 movement has been launched by People United to Save Humanity (P.U.S.H.), under the direction of the Rev. Jesse Jackson, to have Dr. King' s birthday, January 15, declared a national holiday; and WHEREAS, Senator Walter Mondale of Minnesota has introduced a bill in the United States Senate �o have January 15 declared " as a national holiday; and WHEREAS, in this Bi-Centennial year, it is especially fitting to honor the metnory of an outstanding American leader; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of St. Paul goes on record in support of declaring Janua.ry 15, the birthda.y of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. , a national holiday in tribute to a great American and to his many achievements in the area of human rights.
