T ! T L E : PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE MEETING OF MAY 9, 1975
The committee approved a motion that would ban parking on one
side of the street during the State Fair in the area bounded by
Hoyt, Hamline, Como and Snelling, with several exceptions on
streets wide enough for parking on both sides. The motion calls
for signs to be installed one week before the Fair and removed
shortly after the Fair period. The Public Works Department es-
" timates that the cost for signs and labor will average out to
about $1,950 annually. Representatives of the area's residents
had presented the department with an 800-signature petition, re-
questing the one-side parking ban. ___ ___
.. .a
The committee also voted to approve a Public Works Department
` proposal to improve Prior Avenue between Feronia to Minnehaha Avenues.
v The cost for the bituminous overlay, $162,000, will be drawn from
Minnesota State Aid maintenance funds and part of the amount will
be assessed to commercial establishments along the road. ._.

T lT LE : REPORT ON PiJBLIC WORKS COMrffTTEE MEETING OF MAY 2, 1975
The committee heard a preliminary report which put the
cost of the Kipps Glen sewer project at about $765,000. Residents
in attendance at the meeting voiced approval of the project, even
with an approximate assess`ment of $2,300 per household. The
committee asked the Public Works Department to come up with the
cost options, then formal response will be sought from the neigh-
borhood.
In other action, the committee voted to recommend to the
Council a proposal for constructing a new Rice Street bridge ad-
jacent to the present bridge. Cost to the city for this project,
which will be heard by the Council is mid-May, will be $204,000
for the ri_ght-of-way. The other alternatives presented by the
Public Works Department cal_led either for no construction, which
would increase maintenance costs, or to put in a new bridge along
the present alignment, which would be costlier to the city.

NORTHEND . North End Busness Men s Club, Inc.

. aue
May 13, 1975
Mrs. Ruby Hunt
Saint Paul City Council
City Hall
Saint Paul , Minnesota 55102
Dear Mrs. Hunt:
The North End Business Men's Club voted unanimously to go along
with the "parallel bridge" alternate proposal as shown to our Club by
the Engineers and Public Works Department when they displayed the
several ways in which the Rice Street bridge between Lafond and
Sycamore could be replaced. We feel that the "parallel bridge" will
do the least amount of damage to the business district on Rice Street
and that it should cause no hardships for the drivers.
If the bridge were to be replaced by a new one on the same site,
with the "straight proposal", you might as well close the shops now,
since many would not survive. Closing Rice Street for the length of
time it would take to complete the project would make a ghost-town out
of what is already an economically hard hit business district.
We appreciate your consideration regarding this matter.
Sincerely,
_
