Dear Council Members:
It is my understanding a public hearing is scheduled
tomorrow morning regarding a proposal to prohibit
automobile parking on portions of Summit Avenue between
7:00 and 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in favor of
bicycle usage.
My family and I reside at 1456 Summit Avenue and, I
believe, are in the area that would be affected if
this proposal is adopted.
I cannot attend your hearing and, therefore, am writing
to you in this regard.
We enjoy our home and the good services provided by the
City, pay considerable real estate taxes, and are opposed
to this proposal. When I come home from work in the
evening, I simply want to be able to park in front of
my house.
Why should we lose our parking privilege to some transient
bicyclists? Such is our opinion, notwithstanding the
fact that we have five children, practically all of whom
have bicycles:
Not wishing to be entirely negative, perhaps the
following might be helpful. In our view the principal
neighborhood traffic problem is the unwanted, fast
through traffic, which is attracted by the broad avenue

and the higher than normal speed limits on some
portions.
Possibly neighborhood residents and bicyclists could
have their cake and eat it too by having one lane for
bicycles, one moving lane for automobiles, and one
' parking lane.
Another alternative might be establishing a bicycle
path on the center boulevard, although this would
probably be unpopular with the children who often
play there.
Sincerely yours,
Michael W. Arend

Dear Sirs:
I am a cyclist that caamnutes to work five days per week from
Minneagolis to St. Paul. I travel by bicycle from April through
November, weather percnittin and plan to use Sunm►it Avenue.
This route provides the advantages of less hills, less traffic
and more scenery. I would use the whole length of Suit coming
from the river road and continuing on to Bethesda Hospital behind
the State Capital. ')
A designated bicycle lane during rush hour traffic would be
extremely helpful in my opinion. It would discourage auto
drivers from passing me so closely. It would also eliminate
the hassles of going around parked cars, dodging in and out of ,
traffic. Another advantage is the opportunity to pass slower "
cyclists within the lane without having to risk going out into
traffic.
In summary, I strongly favor the idea of a bike Iane and would
certainly use it often. ,
Thank you for the opportunity to express my views.
