As part of the financing involved in the re-roofmg and refurbishment of the Cathedral of Saint Paul, it has come to our attention that a ten foot strip of land running from Dayton Ave. to Selby Ave. which may be either under or immediately adjacent to the Cathedral building itself may be vested in the City of St. Paul and not in the Archdiocese of Saint Paui and Minneapolis as was commonly supposed. Prior to and during the course of the construction of the Cathedral, between 1905 and 1915, the Archdiocese (then know as the Diocese of Saint Paul) acquired title to lots 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8 in Selby Block. The deeds to lots 3 and 4 however, specifically excepted the West ten feet of those lots, which appazently was at that time an alley. By two deeds executed in 1912, title to that West ten feet was conveyed to the City of St. Paui by the then owners. Copies of those two deeds and a portion of the page from the relevant plat book are enclosed for your reference. L,ots 3 and 4 have been higl�lighted and you will notice that no alley is shown on that plat. In 1922 the St. Paul City Council vacated that a11ey by resolution adopted on November 4th of that year. Vacation of the alley was conditioned upon the diocese conveying the west ten feet of lots 5 and 6 Selby Block, which apparently was then serving as the alley in which lay some fifty feet westerly of the vacated alley. That deed was executed and delivered to the city under date of August 23, 1922. A copy of both the vacation action and the deed are enclosed. . As part of the financing involved in the re-roofmg and refurbishment of the Cathedral of Saint Paul, it has come to our attention that a ten foot strip of land running from Dayton Ave. to Selby Ave. which may be either under or immediately adjacent to the Cathedral building itself may be vested in the City of St. Paul and not in the Archdiocese of Saint Paui and Minneapolis as was commonly supposed. Prior to and during the course of the construction of the Cathedral, between 1905 and 1915, the Archdiocese (then know as the Diocese of Saint Paul) acquired title to lots 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 and 8 in Selby Block. The deeds to lots 3 and 4 however, specifically excepted the West ten feet of those lots, which appazently was at that time an alley. By two deeds executed in 1912, title to that West ten feet was conveyed to the City of St. Paui by the then owners. Copies of those two deeds and a portion of the page from the relevant plat book are enclosed for your reference. L,ots 3 and 4 have been higl�lighted and you will notice that no alley is shown on that plat. In 1922 the St. Paul City Council vacated that a11ey by resolution adopted on November 4th of that year. Vacation of the alley was conditioned upon the diocese conveying the west ten feet of lots 5 and 6 Selby Block, which apparently was then serving as the alley in which lay some fifty feet westerly of the vacated alley. That deed was executed and delivered to the city under date of August 23, 1922. A copy of both the vacation action and the deed are enclosed. .
