At today's St. Paul City Council meeting, Commcilmember Jay Benanav will introduce a
resolurion calling for a"rolling blackout" in St. Paul on Thursday evening. The resolution highlights
the worsening energy crisis across the narion and calls on St. Paul citizens to participate in this
nationally coordinated effort at promoting energy conservation and aitemative energy research.
Councilmember Benanav commented, "Only by leadership and coordination can we respond to the
growing apathy toward our national energy policy; efforts such as this enable citizens to work
together to affect that policy."
Councilmember Chris Coleman, who drafted the resolution, was inspired by the efforts at clean
energy and conservation he has seen while attending the International Best Practices Exchange
Conference on "Advanced Strategies for Municipal Acfion on Climate Change and Air Pollution"
in Toronto, Canada. Councilmember Coleman, was invited to present at the conference along with
Public Works empioyee Rick Pearson. The conference, which centers around problems associated
wiffi global climate change is an intemational gathering of climate experts and policy makers
dedicated to addressing the problem via environmental, consumer, and trade policy. "I have been
both excited and dismayed since I have been here at this conference;" said Coleman, "Excited to see
that many in the intemational community see SL Paul as a civic teader in municipal energy policy,
but dismayed at how the current proposed solutions to our national energy crunch only give us more
smog-fiiled air, more nuclear waste, or more bulldozed wilderness. I ihink a roiling blackout is a
good way to respond to this travesty of a national energy policy."
The rolling blackout will occur between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Central Standard Time on
Thursday, June 21. Citizens are asked to turn off or unplug all nonessenrial electrical lights and
appliances during that time.
