01-630ORIGINAL Presented Council Fffe # ��30 Green Sheet #� O� � S Q RESOLUTION CITY OF SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA oZ8 Referred To Committee Date WIIEREAS, Patty Wetterling has been a tireless advocate of child safety at the state and national levels, whose works have resulted in legislation in Minnesota and in the U.S. Congress; and, 3 WHEREAS, Patty Wetterling is a co-founder of the Wetterling Foundation, a non-profit organization founded after 4 the 1989 abducfion of her son, Jacob. The foundation has helped many pazents of abducted children, and has raised 5 the awareness of child protection; and, 6 WHEREAS, Her work helped bring about the enachnent by Congress in 1994 ofthe Jacob Wetteriing Act requiring 7 states to create sex-offender registration programs; and, 8 WHEREAS, In cooperation with the Saint Paul Police Department, Patty Wetterling will be present at A Taste of 9 Minnesota from noon to 4 p.m. June 30 through July 4 to help families create free personal identification kits for 10 children. The kits will include photographs and fingerprints of children along with blood type and hair samples for 11 DNA testing; and, 12 WIIEREAS, A Taste of Minnesota has become an integral part of Saint Paul history, an important way of 13 showcasing our community, and a wholesome environment that promotes fun and public safety. Festival founder 14 and general manager Ron Maddox believes that this yeaz's partnexship between A Taste of Mimiesota and Patty 15 Wetterling symbolizes the festival's strong commitment to a safer city and state; and, 16 WHEREAS, This year's A Taste of Minnesota is expected to be the best one ever. This event will be a great 17 opportunity for promoting the value of personal idenrification kits for children to a lazge number of people at the 18 event and to people who may see the identification kits in media coverage on television and elsewhere; and, 19 WHEREAS, Awareness of the need for child protection in Saint Paul, in this state, and across the nation has been 20 increased by the work of Patty Wetterling; now, 21 TIIEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council, on behalf of Saint Paul's citizens, estends its thanks and 22 officially recognizes Patty Wetterling for her selfless devotion to child safety, to providing solace to families around 23 the nation who have experienced child abductions, and for her willingness to give her time to help parents create 24 identification kits during this year's A Taste of Minnesota.
