PAUL, MN. 55302 The St Paul City Council allocated q10,0.0 for Fiscal Year 197F to be used as ratcli mney for College students eligible mder the Federal or State Colleqe ulork Stuiy Proqram (CWS) . The S10,000.00 fiaure was established on two main reasons: 1) the City's need for student-interns and 2) Federal and State monies available under the CWS program. The City's need (in terms of numbers) had to be trimmed .to correspond to projected monie available under the C!dS programs. Due to a tiqht .job market, the nePd for Colleqe students to qain oractical ex- perience, and the increasino financial costs of higher education both ClS proarars were increased beyond our projections. The State CWS program was increased 50; the Federal C;S program was increased 20. The result being many more students el i gibl e for CiS internshi ps. The effect of this situation as pertaininq to the City of St. Paul is one of need for more interns, students available to fill this need, but the presentudqet does not allor the addition of these students. By June 14, 1976 we will have 46 students interning tiith St. Paul City Departments. Sevent, yfour to 80% of these students ' salaries is provided by the nJS program. The remalning 20 to 26 is matched by the City from the above mentioned $10,000.00. Pro,iections show the budeted 10,000.00 being exhausted on September 24, 1976. I am requesting an additional $5,000.00 for this account so as to allow the City to continue the internships for aooroximately 20 of the 46 present interns through the end of this year. Also, the increased funds would allow us to emloy additional students as needed at the beqinninq of the next academtc ,year. Thank you for your consideration of this matter. cc. Hozza, and Honorable Members of the City Council r _ FR: Thomas J. Kelley, City Administrator RE: Request to Amend the 1976 Budget: Urban Corps Intern Program Attached are copies of a Council Resolution and letter from Ron Guilfoile, Urban Corps Coordinator, requesting that the Council amend the 1976 budget by increasing the Urban Corps' Intern budget from $10,000 to $15, 000. This request is made on the basis of increase in avail- able support funding from the federal and state govern- ment. If the intern budget is increased as part of a 20$ - 80g match, then the City can extend the present intern positions through the end of 1977 and also add additional intern positions. Council approval of the resolution is respectfully re- quested. TJK/lh attachment •;>•zz
