in Saint Paul
1 WHEREAS, Saint Paul narive Dave Winfield, bom in 1951, will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame during
2 his first yeaz of eligibility; and
3 WIIEREAS, Dave Winfield began his career here in Saint Paul playing at the old Oxford Playground, he then
4 became a star athlete at Saint Paul Central High School and played for the Attucks-Brooks American Legion, just as
5 Paul Molitor had 8 years prior; and
6 WHEREAS, being the Most Valuable Player in the 1973 College World Series as a Minnesota Golden Gopher
7 pitcher and outfielder; and
8 WHEREAS, being the only athlete to be drafted into three sports by four teams, Major League BasebalPs San Diego
9 Padres, the Nafional Basketball Associarion's Atlanta Hawks, the American Basketball Association's Utah Stars and
10 the National Football League's Minnesota Vikings; and
11 WHEREAS, Dave Winfield is one of only eight Hall of Fame inductees to play his whole professional career in the
12 Maj ar Leagues and never in the Minor Leagues; and
13 WHEREAS, Dave Winfield eamed seven Gold Glove awards, played for 12 consecutive AllStar Teams and led the
14 Toronto Blue Jays to their first World Championship; and
15 WHEREAS, Dave Winfield gave his best to several teams before joining his hometown Minnesota Twins in 1992
16 where he hit his 3000'� hit, making him the 19'� player to reach that mark; and
17 WHEREAS, Dave Winfield accrued 3,110 hits, 465 home runs, and 1833 RBPs in 22 seasons, thus joining the elite
18 group of Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Eddie Murray, Stan Musial, Carl Yaslrzemski and Cal Ripken as the only players
19 with 3000 hits and 400 home runs; and
20 WIiEREAS, Dave Winfield founded the David M. Winfield Foundation, which provides free baseball tickets and
21 health examinations to underprivileged youth; and
22 WHEREAS, Dave Winfield won the Roberto Clemente Man of the Year Awazd in 1994, which is given to the player
23 who best exemplifies baseball on and off the field; now therefore be it
24 RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council proudly honors Dave Winfield on his induction into the Baseball Hall
25 of Fame on August 5, 2001and recognizes his accomplishments both on and off the field; be it
26 FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council declares June 9, 2001 Dave Winfield Day in Saint Paul.
