01-493ORIGI�IAL �dNIJ1�0 Presented Referred To coun�il Fae # a � _ Green Sheet # C!!DQ`� Committee Date 1 2 RESOLUTION CITY O� SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA aa PEDESTRIAN SAFETY 5UMMIT 3 WHEREAS, a leading livability issue facing all Saint Paul neighborhoods is traffic congestion, dangerous 4 driving and pedestrian safety, and 5 WHEREAS, the Transportation Chapter of the city's adopted Comprehensive Plan commits the city to 6 addressing this problem through traffic calming strategies, and 7 WHEREAS, the Saint Paul City Council, in recognizing the need to more thoroughly address 8 neighborhood traffic and pedestrian safety problems, has scheduled the city's first Pedestrian Safety 9 Summit for May 16-19, in conjunction with the Capital City Traffic Calming Alliance, and several 10 community cosponsors, and 11 WIIEREAS, the goals of the Pedestrian Safety Summit are to address the city's Comprehensive Plan 12 commitments to traffic calming, to educate the public on ways that residents and businesses can calm 13 traffic, to build a citywide network for problem-solving, and to develop new strategies and potentially new 14 city policies for traffic calming, and 15 WI�REAS, the Saint Paul City Council has enlisted internationally renowned traffic expert, urban planner 16 and author David Engwicht, widely considered to be the "father of traffic calming" in North America and 17 Australia, to keynote the Pedestrian Safety Summit, and 18 WI�REAS,DavidEngwichtwillkeynoteaCityCouncilPolicySessiononMayl6,willleadprofessional 19 sessions for city staff and metro area iraffic professionals on May 17 and May 18, and will be featured at 20 two public forums and workshops on May 17 and May 19; therefore be it 1 OR�GINAL o�-yqa I RESOLVED, that the Saint Paul City Council commit $10,000 in City Council Special Project funds to 2 cover the costs of the Pedestrian Safety Summit, and be it further 3 RESOLVED, that City Council staff will continue to seek funding support from community cosponsors 4 to reimburse the City Council Special Projects Funds in part or in whole.
