An administrative Resolution changing the Grade and the
Class Specification for the class of Chief Surveyor in the
Civil Service Rules.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate and desirable to change the Grade and
the Class Specification for the class of Chief Surveyor; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Civil 5ervice Rules be amended in Section 6
thereof, under the heading "Professional-Administrative" Group, by
striking out the title of Chief Surveyor from Grade 20, and by inserting
said title in Grade 21; and be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Civil 5ervice Rules be amended in
5ection 49 thereof by striking out the current specifications for the class of
Chief Surveyor and substituting in lieu thereof the �ttached Class Specifica-
tions for the class of Chief Surveyor.

CHIEF SURVEYOR
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties: Performs responsible supervisory work
planning, coordinating and directing the survey operations of a majox
division; personally takes charge of the most complex or responsible
field surveys, and performs related duties as required.
Supervision Received: Works undex the general guidance and direction
of a bureau or division head.
Supervision Exercised: Exercises within a section technical and admin-
istrative supervision through subordinate supervisors over survey
personnel and technicians.
TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED
The listed examples may not include all duties performed by all positions
in this class.
Supervises, coordinates and assigns work to survey crew leaders.
Supervises and authorizes all preliminary construction and legal
surveys.
Reviews and approves all legal surveys performed by survey crews.
Coordinates the surveying and design operation.
Performs and plats surveys, schedules and establishes priorities of
work assignments, inspects and offers expert opinion on completed
or in progress work of survey crews.
Testifies in court as a professional surveyor for the City.
Researches and recommends new techniques in the development of land and
construction surveys.
Prepares reports and conducts special surveys as required.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of property and real estate laws.
Thorough knowledge of general engineering technology.
Thorough skill in operation and application of surveying practices.
Thorough skill in applying mathematics to surveying problems.
Thorough ability to cottununicate effectively with the public, with
other governmental agencies and with citizen groups.
Considerable ability to supervise and coordinate survey crew leaders.
Considerable ability to rank the priorities of uork assignments and
equipment needs.
Considerable ability to plan, supervise and evaluate the work of
professional and technical employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two years of college in engineering or equivalent and six years' experience
in surveying, at least two years of which must have been as a Surveyor,
or equivalent; or college graduation in civil engineering and two years'
experience as a Surveyor, or equivalent. 6iust be a Registered Land
Surveyor in the State of Minnesota,

This Resolution•upgrades the class of Chief Surveyor i.n the "Profesaional-
Ad.ministrative" Occupational Group from Grade 20 to Grade 21.
It also revises the specifications for the title of Chief Surveyor. The
specificatione have been written i.n the new format, and the minimum
qualifications have been reviewed by the Mixu.mum Qualifications
Committee.
