WHEREAS, public transportation is playing an increasingly-
important role in society; and
WHEREAS, buses, car pools , van pools, and other forms of
public transportation have proven valuable in saving precious
energy, reducing harmful emissions, and reducing congestion on
streets and highways ; and
WHEREAS, both the costs and the adverse environmental
effect of excessive reliance on the private automobile have
increased sharply in recent years; and
WHEREAS, it is in the best interest of Minnesotans to
encourage greater use of all alternatives to the single-
passenger automobile; so, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that this Council declares Thursday, October 20,
1977, to be "TRANSIT THURSDAY" in St. Paul ; and be it
FllRTHER RESOLVED, thaic ali residents of St. Paul are
encouraged to make as many trips as they can on October 20
and thereafter by bus , car pool , or van pool .
