"An ordinance fixing the d.uties and responsibilities a�d the
minimum qualifications for the various classes of positions in the
Clas�i.fied Service of the City, "
approved February 13, 1935, as amended.
THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAINT PAUL DOES ORDAIN;
Section 1. That Ordinance No. 7607, approved. February 13,
1935, as amended, be and the same is hereby further amended by striking
out the specifications for the title of SUPERVISOR OF FLORICULTURE.
Section 2. That said ordinance, as amended.,� be and the same is
hereby further amended by inserting, i.n its proper alphabetical order, the
title and specifications for �

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties: Performs responsible supervisory and
administrative work planning and directing the operation of the City
conservatory and greenhouses; and performs related duties as required.
Supervision Received: Works under the general guidance and direction of
a division head.
Supervision Exercised: Exercises within the unit general technical and close
administrative supervision over gardening work.
TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED
The listed examples may not include all duties performed by all positions in
this class.
Supervises and participates in the long range planning and design of con-
servatory exhibits and shows.
Plans, directs, and manages the propagation, breeding, planting, culture
and exhibition of a wide variety of flowers, fruit plants, and ornamental
shrubs and trees.
Determines the variety and quantities of horticultural flowers and plants
required for the City park system. and e�ibitions.
Plans and directs the work of subordinates and other employees.
Makes tours of inspection to see that work is being done as planned and
that facilities, areas, and equipment are being properly managed, operated
and maintained.
Prepares bulletins, papers, and scientific articles on plant life technical
experiments and exhibitions.
Schedules and conducts tours and gives lectures.
Disseminates horticulture facts and information through the news media.
Prepares unit annual budget; requisitions supplies, materials and equipment;
controls routine expenditure of funds.
Interviews job applicants; makes recommendations regarding selection,
promotion and other personnel actions.
KNOW LEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the field of horticulture.
Thorough knowledge of the fundamental applications of botany, genetics,
plant physiology and plant pathology to general horticulture.
Comprehensive knowledge of life cycle, growth habits, propagation and
cultural requirements of ornamental flowers, fruits, shrubs, and trees.
Considerable ability to plan the execution and coordination of a variety of
horticultural projects.
Considerable ability to prepare technical articles relating to horticulture.
Ability to plan, layout, organize and direct the work of subordinates.
Thorough knowledge of the use and application of fertilizers , fungicides
and pesticides.
Considerable ability to speak effectively before audiences and large groups.
Considerable knowledge of current management and supervisory principles
and procedures.
Working ability to prepare reports and to evaluate programs.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
College graduation with a major in horticulture, floriculture, or a related
field and four years' experience in the propagation, planting, culture,
arrangement, and exhibition of a wide variety of ornamental flowers and
plants, two years of which must have involved administrative responsibilities.
