"SAFE CsUN STORAGE" PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT PRODUCED BY
TI� CTTY OF SAINT PAUL OFFICE OF CABLE COMMUNICATION
1 WHEREAS, safe gun storage is a public health and safety issue of the upmost importance to the City of Saint
2 Paul; and
3 WHEREAS, studies have demonstrated that nearly all unintentional shootings occur in or around the home; and
4 WFiEREAS, the need to enswe safe gun storage is especially important if chiidren are in the home given that
S studies have shown that up to 80 percent of children can identify where guns are kept in the house; and
6 WHEREAS, it is the law that gun owners are responsible for keeping guns out the hands of children; and
7 WI�REAS, television public service announcements (PSAs) are a proven and effective way to inform citizens
8 about how to prevent public heakh and safety prohlems; and
9 WHEREAS, the City of Saint Paul Office of Cable Communication created two "Safe Gun Storage" PSAs to
10 be run on Chanei 18; and
11 WF�REAS, the PSAs inform adults that best methods for safely storing a firearm are either to secure it with a
12 gun Iock or safely store it in a lock box or swrage safe and teach children if theq find an unsecured fxearm to
13 "don't touch" the weapon and "tell an adult" about the gun; and
14 WFIEREAS, these P5As were produced by Nick Nelson of the City of Saint Paul C3ffice of Cable
25 Communication, with the assistance of Elaine Mazzitello of the Saint Paul-Ramsey County Department of
16 Public Health, and Officer Michael Johnson of the Saint Paul Police Deparhnent; and
l7 WF�REAS, the actors who appeared in the PSAs were provided by SteppingStone Theatre, an altemative
8 theatre far youth, located in Saint Paul, tliat specializes in new works for the stage, classes, and outreach; now
9 therefare be it
0 RESOLVED, that the City of Saint Paul honors and thanks SteppingStone Theaxre, especially Artistic D'uector
1 Richard Iiitchler and actors Anne Aampe, Emily Hampe, Alex Fukui, Wiliis A. Yaung III, and Aaron Colontti,
2 and City and County staff for their efforts in producing and acting in the "Safe Gun Storage" public service
3 announcements.
