An Administrative Resolution amending the
Civil Service Rules.
WHEREAS, it is appropriate and desirable to establish a new class
title of Vehicle Mechanic Trainee and Class Specifications for said title; and
WHEREAS, said class shall be i.n the Classified Service of Civil
Service; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Civil Service Rules be amended by adding to
Section 7, under the heading "Skilled Labor", in alphabetical order, the title
of Vehicle Mechanic Trainee; and be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Ci�vil Service Rules be further
amended by inserting in Section 49, in proper alphabetical order, the attached
Class Specification for the new title of Vehicle Mechanic Trainee.

VEHICLE MECHANIC TRAINEE
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties: Performs mechanical work assisting in the
repair, maintenance and servicing of maintenance, construction and public
safety vehicles; and performs related duties as required.
Supervision Received: Works under the immediate teahnical supervision of a
vehicle mechanic or vehicle mechanic supervisor.
Supervision Exercised: None.
TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED
The listed examples may not include all duties performed by alI positions in
this class.
In the capacity of a learner:
Assists in servicing, maintaining and repairing automobiles, trucks, tractors,
graders, scarifiers, oilers, flushers, sweepers, snowplows, fire pumps and
pumping machinery, fire apparatus and other municipal equipment.
Assists in detecting causes of trouble in equipment and making necessary
repairs.
Assists in dismantling, repairing or replacing broken or worn parts.
Assists in assembling, adjusting and testing internal combustion engines,
timing gears, ignition and transmission systems, brakes, clutches,
differentials, magnetoes, carburators, etc.
Assists in refitting pistons, piston rings, wrist pins and bushings.
Assists in refitting main connecting rods and camshaft bearings. _

Assists in servicing, maintaining and repairing hydraulic and mechanical
ladder hoists, pumps, nozzles, gates, turret pipes, etc.
Assists in making emergency'repairs to fire apparatus at fires.
Assists in making miscellaneous parts and fittings when necessary.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge to read and follow technical manuals.
Working knowledge of inechanical principles and theories.
Working ability to understand and follow complex oral and written
instructions.
Working skill in the use of hand and power tools.
Working skill in the repair and maintenance of inechanical systems.
MINIMtJM QUALIFICATIONS
'Itiao years' experience as a Vehicle Maintenance Worker (Light), Vehicle
Maintenance Worker (Heavy), Fire Equipment Serviceman, Equipment
Repairman, or equivalent. Must possess a Minnesota Driver's License.
After completing the training program, a Vehicle Mechanic Trainee will
be permitted two opportunities to pass the examination for Vehicle
Mechanic. Failure to qualify for promotion to Vehicle Mechanic will
be cause for termination or reduction.
