WHEREAS, it is appropriate and desirabl.e to combine and replace
certain titles and class specifications in t,he Civi]. Service Rules; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that the Civil Service Ru].es be amended in Section ?
tliereof, under the heading "Skilled Labor", by striking out the title of
Auto Mechanic Leadman and by substituting in lieu thereof, in proper
alphabetical order, the title of Vehicle Mechanic Lead Worker; and be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Civi.l Service Rules be furtlier
amended i.n Section 7 thereof, under the headi.ng "5killed Labor", by striking
out the tit].es of Auto Mechanic and Fireman-Mechanic and by substituting

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties: Performs lead work directing and participating
in the repair, maintenance and servicing of cars, trucks and specialized
equipment; and performs related duties as required.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of a unit super-
visor.
Supervision Exercised: Exercises close supervision directly over skilled
and semi-skilled workers.
TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED
The Iisted examples may not include all duties performed by all positions in
this class.
Directs and participates in the repair, maintenanee and servicing of City
vehicles and equipment such as trucks, automobiles, construction equip-
ment, fire apparatus, grounds maintenance and forestry equipment and
related equipment and accessories.
Directs and participates in the determination of the nature and extent of
malfunction or damage; operates a variety of testing devices.
Directs and participates in road and diagnostic tests to locate defects in
operation or to verify repair work.
May direct and participates in the inspection of new vehicles and equipment
for compliance with contract specifications.
Directs and participates in the repair and maintenance of all types of
internal combustion engines and accessories.
Directs and participates in the development and modification of vehicles
and equipment to effect improvements or to meet new requirements.

Considerable knowledge of the tools, materials and equipment used in vehicle

AUTO MECHANIC LEADMAN
Duties and responsibilities:
Under supervision, to act as a leadman in an automotive repair
shop, to overhaul and repair automobiles, trucks, and road
maintenance and road construction machinery; and to perform
related work as as signed.
Examples of work performed:
To perform the duties of a mechanic foreman in his absence.
To assign and explain repair work to other auto mechanics.
To inspect machines, equipment, in-coming materials, and
completed work.
To service, maintain, and repair automobiles, trucks, tractors,
graders, scarifiers, oilers, flushers, sweepers, snowplows,
pumping machinery, and other municipal equipment.
To detect the causes of trouble in equipment and to make the
necessary repairs.
To dismantle, repair, or replace broken or worn parts.
To assemble, adjust, and test internal combustion engines,
timing gears, ignition and transmission systems, brakes,
clutches, differentials, magnetos, carburetors, etc.
• To refit pistons, piston rings, wrist pins, and bushings.
To refit main connecting rods and camshaft bearings.
To make miscellaneous parts and fittings when necessary.
