WHEREAS, on March 8, 1908, thousands of women garnient
workers marched through the streets of New York.`s Lo�rer
, East Side, pro�esting sweat shops and child labor, and demanding
the right to vote; and
WHEREAS, at an International Conference in 1910, Clara
Zetkin, a German political leader, proposed that in the name
of these brave American �aomen workers, March 8th be declared
International Women's Day and be dedicated to fighting for
peace, economic justice and women's rights; and
WHEREAS, International Women's Day has become an Inter- ;
, national Holiday observed by millions throughout the world ;
and finally recognized by the United States Government in �
1975 when the President proclaimed March 8th International ;
Women`s Day; and '
WHEREAS, in 1978, women Htorkers are still struggling
for decent working conditions, a living wage and union ;
representation in many factories, plants, mines and mills,
including the J. P. Stevens Textile Mills; therefore be it !
RESOLVED that the City Council of Saint Paul proclaims '
Wednesday, March 8, 1978, International Women's Day and
encourages residents to observe this day by dedicating them-
selves to the struggle for women's equality. �
