The installation of signs for this short portion of frontage road cannot be provided, as requested. There are two main reasons why signs can't be provided. The first being that it would be advertising for a commercial establishment and the second because of the complexitq of freeway signing. Back in February of this year, the Public Works Department asked if we had any objections to West 7th Bl,vd. being renamed Gannon Road, since it was on State right of way. We told them that we didn't have anq objections and also informed them that no signs would be installed because it would be advertising for Gannon's Restaurant. Even if this roadway was not renamed, we could not provide a sign in the location requested. Trying to provide an additional sign within or west of the Fort Snel.ling interchange must be of a real need for the majority of motorists. Only signs giving motorist orientation for major destinations can be provided at or near a major interchange. High traffic volumes and speeds demand that signs be located and spaced so as to provide information without introducing confusion and distraction. Along with roadway numbers, only destinations such as Fort Snelling, St. Paul, Minneapolis, and the Mendota Bridge are used west of this interchange. ;:: u ,. An Equal Opportuniry Employer O _ - t f Ms. Rose Mix Page ao September 7, 1979 It is expected that motorists will relate their destination to appropriate highway numbers, communities or street names which generally identify the exit serving their particular destination. Businesses should relate their locations by roadways already being signed £or. 'I'liis can be done by providing a map or diagram on advertising devices.
