An Administrative Resolution establishing new titles
and class specifications in the Civil Service Rules.
RE50LVED, that the Civil Service Rules be amended in Section
3. J. (Professional-Administrative Non-Supervisors Group) by placing
a star (�) before the title of Information Specialist in Grade 5, and by
adding at the bottom of the page the following statement:
"This title is abolished except as to present incumbents. "; and be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Civil Service Rules be further amended
in Section 3. J. (Professional-Administrative Non-Supervisors Group) by in-
se rting the title of Public Information Specialist I in Grade 3 and the title of
Public Information Specialist II in Grade 7; and be it
FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Civil Service Rules be further amended
in Section 32 by striking out the class specification for Information Specialist
and by inserting, in proper alphabetical order, the attached specifications for
the new titles of Public Information Specialist I and Public Information Specialist
II.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties: Performs entry level professional work de-
veloping promotional and educational materials and conducting public
relations programs; and performs related duties as required.
Supervision Received: Works under the close supervision.of a unit supervisor
or division or department head. �
Supervision Exercised: None.
TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED
The listed examples may not include all duties performed by all positions in
this class.
Researches, writes, edits and arranges for the distribution of news releases,
publications and special articles and provides liaison with news media
during routine news coverage.
Researches, writes and edits newsletters and internal communications; prepares
division or department educational or promotional brochures and literature.
Prepares and assembles audio-visual materials including photographs, slides,
tapes, movies, graphs, maps and charts.
Prepares or edits scripts for presentation at public meetings or on radio-TV.
Plans and arranges displays, exhibits, tours, lectures, films and other
public events to promote goodwill and inform the community.
Establishes and maintains collections of books, pamphlets and other reference
material; collects and records data and statistics.
Provides general or technical infox�ation in response to inquiries or
complaints from state and local agencies and the general public.
Attends meetings to obtain or provide information relating to the unit's plans,
programs, procedures and operations.
Coordinates the activities of volunteer groups.
Assists in developing and presenting education programs for schools and
community organizations.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Some knowledge of photographic and audio-visual techniques, materials and
equipment.
Working knowledge of layout, design and printing processes.
Working knowledge of the functions, programs and goals of the department.
Working knowledge of the operations, procedures and requirements of
communications media.
Working ability to obtain, develop and distribute information of interest
to or requested by the media, employees, special interest groups or the
general puhlic.
Working ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups.
Considerable ability to write clearly, concisely and effectively.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
College graduation with a major in journalism or communications; or college
graduation and a total of six months'full time experience in a journalism
or communieations field either prior to or after graduation.

Plans, organizes and executes a comprehensive public relations program.

arrange for special media coverage.
