An Administrative Resolution establishing the
title and class specification for Custodian
Engineer III--Library in the Civil Service Rules.
RESOLVED, that the Civil Service Rules be amended in Section
3. C (Custodial Engineers, UngradedGroup), by inserting in proper
alphabetical order, the title of Custodian Engineer III--Library; and be it
FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Civil Service Rules be further amended
in Section 32 by inserting, in proper alphabetical order, the attached spec-
ification for Custodian Engineer III--Library.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
General Statement of Duties: Performs and directs the performance of semi-
skilled work in the cleaning and routine maintenance of the climate control
system, building and grounds of the Central Library; and performs related
duties as required.
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Building
Maintenance Supervisor.
Supervision Exercised: F�cercises immediate technical supervision directly over
lower level custodial engineers and custodial workers. Assumes the duties
of the Building Maintenance Supervisor-Libraries. in his absence.
TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMID
The listed examples may not include all duties perfornaed by all positions in
this class.
Assigns, directs and reviews the work of the custodial staff of the Central
Library.
Demonstrates work practices and use of equipment.
Enforces employee safety regulations and housekeeping rules in the Central
Library.
Initiates requests for personnel actions.
Greases, oils and tends other mechanical equipment related to a heating plant,
and mechanical equipment re],ated to the air conditioning system.
Cleans fans and fan housings, related equipment and ducts; oils fan bearings,
ad�usts tension and changes belts on fans;cleans and/or changes air filters,
cleans motors and changes oil.
Monitors automatic controls on boilers, air conditioner and sets switches for
day and night operation, reports malfunctions to higher authority, takes
immediate action to correct or shut down boiler during hazardous or improper
operation.
Monitors and re-programs computerized climate control system.
Mops, strips, seals and waxes floors; operates industrial type buffers and
scrubbing machines; vacuinns and shampoos carpet using powered cleaning
equipment; sets up and takes down tables and chairs for special events.
Removes ice and snow from sidewalks and other paved surfaces using hand
and powered equipment, mows and trims grassy area surrounding building using
hand and powered lawn mowing equipment.
Prepares reports and maintains records on fuel consumption, vandalism, keeFs
time sheets, and equipment repairs and services.
Maintains elevators and makes minor repairs.
Performs light preventive maintenance work on powered mechanical equipment.
KNOWI.EDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of hot air gas furnace and hot water systems operations
and low pressure boiler operation and chilled-water conditioning systems.
Considerable ability to interpret temperature and pressure gauges and to take
appropriate corrective action.
Considerable knowledge of general housekeeping and cleaning materials, equipment
and methods.
Working knowledge of safe and effective use of powered mechanical equipment
including lawn mowers, snow blowers, small tractor, scrubbers and buffers,
compressors and hand maintenance equipment including mops, rakes and shovels.

Working ability to perform physical labor over extended periods of time in
adverse weather conditions.
Considerable ability to demonstrate work practices, set work priorities and
to supervise.
Considerable ability to lift, move and control heavy objects and equipment.
The ability to work nights, weekends and holidays and to respond to emergencies
on short notice.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Two years' experience as a Custodian Engineer II--Library; or. two years'
experience as a Custodian Engineer II and either a certificate in basic
refrigeration from TVI or equivalent or one year of refrigeration exper-
ience or four years' experience as a Custodian Engineer I including one
year of refrigeration experience. Must possess a First Class Engineer,
Grade C license.

PURPOSE AND RATIONALE FOR THIS ACTION:
This Resolution will establish the title of Custodian Engi.neer III--Library in Section
3. C (Custodial Engineers - Ungraded Group) of the Civil Service Rules and a Class
Speci.fication for this title in Section 32 of the Civil Service Ru1es. This class defines
the duties and responsibilities of the position which supervises the maintenance of the
Central Library facility. This class will be filled from the Custodian Engineer III list.
