An Administrative Resolution revising the Class
Specification for the title of Gardener in the Civil
Service Rules.
RESOLVED, that the Civil Service Rules be amended by striking
from Section 32 the Class Specification for the title of Gardener, and
by substituting in lieu thereof, the attached Class Specification for the
title of Gardener.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK -
General Statement o€ Duties: Performs skilled cJork involving the propa-
gation and cultivation of greenhouse and garden plants; and performs
related duties as required.
, Supervision Received: Works under the general technical supervision of
the supervising gardener and the close administrative supervision of
the conservatory manager.
Supervision Exercised: None.
TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMID
The listed examples may not include all duties performed by all positions in
this class.
Waters, f ertilizes, weeds and trims plants, trees and shrubs.
Propagates plants fram cuttings or seeds; transplants, pots and repots
plants.
Inspects plants, trees and shrubs for fungus or pest infestations; selects
and administers fungicide or pesticide, under supervision.
Assists in the p�anning and design of floral shows and exhibits; parti-
cipates in the construction of props, sets and backdrops.
Assists in the design of flower beds for City parks, cultivates and
maintains soil and plants, flowers and bulbs in park flower beds.
Performs routine building and grounds maintenance including sweeping,
scrubbing, washiag windows and making minor repairs.
Answers visitor inquiries regarding care and cultivation of conservatory
plants and trees.
Operates small gardening machines, such as tillers, scooters, etc.
RNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of growing seasons and cultural practices of common
and tropical plants and trees.
Considerable knowledge of propagation methods required to assure optim�mm
yield and quality of flowering plants.
Considerable knowledge of the use and application of fertilizers,
fungicides and pesticides.
Considerable skill in potting and transplanting of plants.
Working ability to observe recurring patterns, anticipate and adjust for
variable conditions in cultivation and growing of flowering plants and
trees.
Working ability to judge and coordinate colors and patterns.
Working knowledge of gardening machines, i.e. tillers, weeders, nowers, etc.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
T�ao years' experience in gardening and/or flower culture on the commercial
leyel; or thirty credit hours in horticulture or related field.

The Finance Committee , at its :neeting of April 28 , 1980 , recommended approval
of the following :
1 . Resolution revising minimum qualifications for. Fire Captain to - i-equire
completion of a teacher training course wi�thin the one y.ear probationary
period and to specify experience cannot be substituted for both sections
of the course. (10852-RH)
2 . Resolutron revising class specs for Gardener to better describe duties
and responsibility of position and revise minimum. qualifications to
speciry "commercial" experience and to allow education _in horticulture .
No change in rate o.f. pay. (10853-RH)
3 . Resolution revisilig class specs for titles of Custodian F.ngineer I F, II-
Library. Major difference is distinction between small and large branch
libraries . (10855-RH)
4 . Resolution establishing title of Custodian Engineer III-Library and a
cla.ss specification . This class defines duties and responsibilities
of the position which supervises the maintenance of the Central Library
facility. (10854-RH)
5 . Resolution establishing rate of pay of. �8 . 45 for first 6 months , and
$8 . 91 atter 6 months for title of Custodian-Engineer-III-Library .
Same rate of pa.y given to Custodian Engineer III . (10856-ARH)
6 . Resolution will revise class specs for title of Building Maintenance
Supervisor- Libraries to describe more accurately duties and responsi-

ACTION REQUESTED
We recommend your approval and submission of this Resolution to the City Council.
PURPOSE AND RATIONALE FOR THIS ACTION:
This resolution will revise the class specification for Gardener. The new specification
better describes the duties and responsibilities of the position and revlses the minimum
qualifications to speci.fy "commercial" experience and to allow education in horticulture.
There is no change in the rate of pay.
