WHEREAS, November 4, 1979, was a day of extreme agony and sorrow for the people of
the United States; a day when, for the first time in history, a United States embassy
was attacked and its personnel taken prisoner; and
WHEREAS, the United States, during the past 444 days, has been negotiating with the
unstable governing elements of Iran for the safe return of 52 American citizens; and
WHEREAS, during April of 1980, eight brave American servicemen lost their lives in
a failed effort to rescue their fellow Americans; and
WHEREAS, former President Jimmy Carter through patience, persistence, and hard
negotiations did successfully resolve the massive and complex political , economic and
diplomatic problems inherent in these negotiations without relinquishing the honor of
our great country nor the tradition of peaceful solutions to world problems on which
our democracy was founded; and
WHEREAS, the American people can at long last be freed of their pent-up feelings
of rage, helplessness, weariness, and despair with which they have lived over the long
months; and
WHEREAS, the 52 American heroes can finally return to their homes and families to
once again take up their lives in a free society; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, that in honor of the 52 Americans freed on January 20 and also to honor
the eight brave Americans who gave their lives in a vain effort to rescue them, the
City of Saint Paul proclaims January 22 "Freedom Day" for the City of Saint Paul .
