Villaume IIIC/2 Deputy City Attorney RE: Commodore Hotel Claims Mr. and Mrs . William La.rson were tenants of the Commodore Hotel at the time of the fire and explosion. They were attempting to evacuate the building and waiting for an elevator when the second and most severe explosion took place, blowing the elevator door out and injuring the couple. Lorraine Larson was 59 years old and sustained a fracture of the right wrist, superficial cuts and bruises, a deep penetrating puncture wound of her right lower leg resulting in a small scar and a back strain. William Larson was 72 years old at the time and suffered a concussion, a scalp laceration, a hearing loss to the right ear and an aggravation of a pre-existing back condition. Their total specials were approxima.tely $3,400. Their claim has been settled in the amount of $23,000 and the City' s share of 10% equals $2,300. Henry Sm'ith was also a tenant of the hotel. He was in his room in the south wing of the building when the explosion occurred in the north wing. He sustained no physical injury at the time. He incurred damage to his automobile of $961. 28, $1,580 in moving expense, and $450 in other clean-up and repair costs . He also claimed an injury to his teeth as a result of a fall six weeks after the explosion. Smith contended that his fall was somehow related to ar emotional condition that resulted from the explosion. His claim was settled in the amount of $4, 250 and the City' s share is $410. .C c Members of the City Council Page Two June 12, 1981 Josephine Finck was a tenant of the hotel who suffered both personal injury and property damage as a result of the fire and explosion. She died of unrelated causes some time after the explosion, but there rema.ined a claim for $38 of property dama.ge loss not covered by insurance and our share of that settlement is 10% or $3.80. The Office of the City Attorney recommends approval of the above settlements . FEV:jr Attachment
