Pursuant to the authority contained in Chapter 73 of the Saint � Paul Legislative Code and upon the request of the Heritage Preser- � vation Commission of the City of Saint Paul, and after having duly � considered the matter at a public hearing held in accordance with � the said ordinances, the Council of the City of Saint Paul does r-•' hereby designate the following described property to be a Heritage �j Preservation Site: Joseph Brings House, 314 North Smith, Saint Paul, Minnesota, on property legally described as Lot 1 of Thomas Daly Subdivision of Lots 4, 5, 6 and 7, Block 50 of Dayton and Irvine's Addition to Saint Paul. The Brings House is one of the feti•r examples in Saint Paul of a t�ro-story Pioneer era stone residence. It is b�ilL of localiy quarried limestone, featuring unusual decQrative elenents . . 2. Its architectural character is significant because it is a rare representative of the transitional phase in Minnesota architecture between the �ederal and Greek Revival styles, and also hints at the Italianate style soon to follow. Common characteristics of this transitional style were simplicity, sparse exterior detail , and a formalized symmetrical appearance. This style was practical for the early settlers because it fit their life style, limitations of material shortages, and rapid construction necessary during the Pioneer era. The Brings House is a remnant of the residen�ial architecture built by the working community which settled the West Seventh area. Few examples o-P this type of architecture exist today in St. Paul . The only other examples of such two-story stone residences are the David Luckert House at 480 Iglehart Avenue, and the Waldman House at 445 Smith Avenue. Smaller one and one-half story stone structures also exist. They are the Mar�tin Weber House at 202 McBoal and the Justus Ramsey House at 252 West Seventh Streete The building material is locally quarried limestane. Corner quoining accents the smoothly finished front facade and the roughly finished side and back facades. There are a few simple elements of decoration unusual to limestone houses constructed in this era. Underscoring the low hipped roof is a row of underlined widespread modillions. The windows are six over six, double hung with smooth limestone lintels and sills. The three bay arrangement is symmetrically dispositioned on the flat, proportioned facade. The entrance is beneath the upper right window. Surrounding the door are flanking side- lights and a rectangular transom. The original owner of this house was Joseph Brings. He was a German immigrant who arrived in St. Paul in 1863 with his wife and children. He operated a coopery business out of his house until he moved in 1871 . In 1879 he switched over to a feed business called "The Brings Feed Store." His business was passed down through his family and ran at the same spot at 316 West Seventh Street until about fifteen years ago. The Brings House has had many owners. From 1883-i888 Major John Kelliher owned the house. He was a director of the Seven Corners Bank, a life member of the Chamber of Commerce, and interested in real estate in the city and vicinity. Additions to the original design included shutters and a three bayed front porch, with an upper row of spindles , modillions, and simply capped columns wi�ich was added sometime before 1900. Alterations included removal of the front porch, one of the two chimneys located on the east exterior wall , and replacement of the wooden shingles with asphalt shingles . Also removed was the two-floored back porch which completed the symmetry and regularity of the plan originally ' , ' , ., r j � -2- designed. The exterior limestone facades have been painted a light yellow color with brown trim. The nouse is structurally very sound with its solid eighteen inch thick walls of limestone. However, there is a crack in the east exterior wall which extends from the roofline to half way down the wall . This was caused from a water leak in the chimney because there u�as na liner in the chimney.
