Re: Public Hearing on Vacation of Farmers Market Site
Dear Councilman Maddox:
On behalf of the Save the Market Coalition I demand that the
public hearing on the vacation of the Farmers Market be held at
an evening hour.
The choice of a 10: 00 a.m. meeting time effectively denies
public participation in the hearing. The vast majority of people
who use and support the Market are working people who simply
cannot leave their jobs to attend a mid-morning meeting.
There are those who believe that the Council wants to decidc
the Farmers Market issue with the least possible public participa-
tion and accountability. The council president, after all, appeared
at the very first public meeting on the Farmers Market issue and
tried to persuade the Market supporters not to organize to present
their views. The scheduling of this meeting at 10: 00 a.m, supports
the belief that the Council wants to decide this vital issue of
disposition of public lands with as little public participation
as possible.
We require more than technical compliance with the pub.lic
meeting provision of the vacation ordinance; we demand that the .
meeting be held when the public can attend and be heard. The
meeting must be rescheduled to an evening hour.

Very truly yours,
Paul D. Nelson
President, Save the Market Coalition
