An ordinance amending Chapter 34 of the Saint
Paul Legislative Code (Housing Code) , pertaining to
sleeping space in cellars, pertaining to light and
ventilation in kitchens, and pertaining to required
egress stairways.
THE GOUNCIL OF THE GITY OF SAINT PAUL DOES ORDAIN:
Section 1.
That Section 34. 13, paragraph (4) of the Saint Pau1 I
Legislative Code be and the same hereby is amended to read: ',

be made, on the exterior side of the window, that
extends at least to -the clepth of the window sill.
The excavation shall continue For at least three
feet to the exterior side of the window and at
least three feet on each side of the window.
Should the window sill be 48 inches or more below
�rade, a stairway shall be provided from he
excavation to �rade. � A door leading directly
to the outside and providin� an exit at �rade,
�or the slee in room onl ma �e used in lieu
of the specified win ow.
Section 2.
That Secl3on 34.14, paragraph (1) of the Saint Paul
Legislative Code be and the same hereby is amended to
read:
(1) vatural li�ht in habitable rooms. Every
habitable room shall have at least one window of
approved size facing directly to the outdoors or
to a court, provided that if conneeted to a room
or area used seasonably (e.g. , porch) , then
adequate daylight must be possible through this
interconnection. Minimum total �,rindow area measured
between stops for every habitable room shall be
eigh� percent of the floor area of such room. .
Whenever walls or other portions of like structures
face a window o# any room and such like obstruc-
tions are located less than three feet from the
window and extend to a level above that of the
ceiling of the room, such a window shall not be
deemed to face directly to the outdoors and shall
not be inciuded as contributing to the required
minimum total window area.
�� ��_�; Windows shall not be required in kitchens of
dwellin� units when such kitchen has a clear,
unobstructed openin� of 50 percent and not less
than 20 square feet of the common wall to an
ad,joinin� habitable room and when such kitchen
is provided with an approved tnechanical �entilation
system. In addition, the window area of the ad,join-
ing habitable room, referrecl to above, shall be
of' sut'fic ieni size so as to nrovide ior the li ht
and ventilation requ , rement oi the ��itehen area

Section 4.
That Section 34. 10 of the Saint Paul Legislative Code
be and the same hereby is amended by adding to paragraph
(3) a new sub—paragraph (d) to read as follows:
(d) All required egress stairways shall have a minimum '
width dimensiori of 30 inches and shall be in '
compliance with all other requirements for
stairways. �
Section 5. '
This ordinance shall be deemed a part of the Saint Paul
Legislative Code and shall be incorporated therein and
given an appropriate chapter and�or section number at
the time o� the next revision of said Legislative Code.
Section 6.
This ordinance shall take effect and be in force 30
