WHEREAS, Construction of Bridge No. 5664, which carries JACKSON ST. over the tracks
of the Burlington Northern Railroad Company (Formerly the Great Northern Railway
Company) also included the erection of a steel stairway adjacent to and east of the
bridge and northerly of Pennsylvania Avenue, and
WHEREAS, The said stairway was not erected for the general use of the public, but was
to furnish railroad employees easy access to facilities of the railroad, and
WHEREAS, Said facilities are no longer in operation; the owner of the property adjacent
to the stairway desires that the stairway be closed off; the stairway is now little
used except by transients; and other routes are available for access to the area;
be it
RESOLVED, That the removal of said stairway is hereby authorized, and the Director
of Public Works is directed to dismantle the stairway, place barricades as necessary
to prevent its further use and furnish protection to the public, and to salvage such
materials from the stairway that might be reused at other stairway installations.

What Will be Achieved by Taking Action on the Attached Materials? (Purpose/Rationale):
Department of Public Works will be authorized to remove the stairway located northerly
of Pennsylvania Avenue and east of the Jackson Street Bridge over the Burlington Northern
Railroad. The stairway was used by employees walking to the railroad facilities
located under the bridge. Facilities are no longer being used, and stairways are
only used by transients. Ma.terials from stairway can be used at other locations.
Financial , Budgetary and Personnel Irr�acts Anticipated:
Eliminate small maintenance expense at present location, but reuse of materials will
save approxi.mately $2,000 for other required materials.
